The Story of the Bass Guitar

On the second Saturday of the half-term break, our school was visited by Marek Bero, a bassist, teacher, and author of the instructional books The Bass Guitar Gym. In two workshops, he guided children from grades 1–4 through the fascinating history of the bass guitar—a vital instrument without which music is “like food without salt.”

Using videos and his own guitar, he demonstrated to the children that while we often don’t focus on them, the tones of the bass register not only enrich music but actually hold it together. Among our students, many enthusiastic young musicians emerged, and we hope the workshop inspired them to create their own music—and perhaps one day even to play the bass guitar.
