Citrónky: Music That Unites and Brightens Saturday Mornings

Every Saturday morning, before the main programme of lessons begins, the premises of Czech School without Borders, London are filled with songs. The choir Citrónky regularly brings together more than a dozen pupils who share a love of music and a desire to start their school day through collective singing.

Citrónky is composed of children ranging from Reception to Year 7. Together, they explore the richness of Czech musical heritage — from contemporary songs to traditional folk melodies. During rehearsals, pupils develop their vocal skills through part-singing and canons, while also strengthening their sense of rhythm with the help of simple instruments such as percussion sticks, handbells and the ever-popular kazoo. Choir sessions are therefore not only about singing, but also about creativity, cooperation and the joy of making music together.

The choir plays an important role in preserving and celebrating Czech cultural traditions, offering children a supportive environment in which they can develop both musically and personally, building confidence along the way.

Citrónky regularly performs at key school events, including the St Nicholas celebration, Easter gathering and the summer fête. Their performances are always warmly received and provide a delightful highlight of the programme, earning well-deserved applause from audiences.

The choir Citrónky represents a vibrant and joyful part of school life, giving children the opportunity to share music, cultural heritage and meaningful experiences together. 🎶
